How to choose hydraulic breaker
Nowadays, the use of attachements in construction and mining works is more and more widespread. One of the most popular attachments are hydraulic breakers because they can be used to perform a variety of tasks such as demolition (of buildings, concrete pillars, bridges), breaking or cleaning of roads and pavements, crushing or breaking of larger materials, digging trenches, etc. To satisfy all these different specific needs, they are produced in different sizes and models.
To do a good job, you need a good tool.
Choosing the right hydraulic breaker for work machinery is one of the biggest concerns of every employer in the construction and mining industry. By purchasing a mismatching or incompatible attachment, it is possible to damage both components and thus cause enormous financial damage to the business. To make the right decision for your work machines, consider all your options before making a final decision.
We have compiled a list of important features that you should pay attention to when buying a hydraulic breaker:
1. Weight of the base machine.
The weight of the hydraulic breaker should never exceed 10% of the weight of the base machine.
For construction machinery up to 10 tons, the hydraulic breaker selection rule of 8-10% of the weight of the base machine is applied, and for construction machinery over 20 tons, the rule of 7-10% of the base machine is applied. While lighter hydraulic breakers are used for combined construction machinery that weigh up to 5% of the weight of the base machine.
There are no strict industry standards because the choice of hydraulic breaker is largely determined by the type of work performed in the field. For example, if you perform stationary tasks in a quarry or mine, you should choose heavy hydraulic breaker that weigh 7-10% of the weight of the base machine. And, if you're doing work at height like demolitions of buildings, you'll use lighter hydraulic breakers that weigh up to 5% of the weight of the base machine.
2. Oil flow.
The oil flow of the hydraulic breaker should match the productivity of pump of the base machine.
Each hydraulic breaker requires a certain flow and pressure from the hydraulic pumps on the base machine, which is determined by the hydraulic breaker manufacturer. Therefore, the capacity of the hydraulic pumps of the base machine essentially determines the selection of the hydraulic breaker so that the attachement itself can be used to its full capacity.
3. Working pressure.
There must be an operating valve for the hydraulic line to control the pressure for optimal operation of the equipment.
Correctly set safe working pressure level is crucial for smooth operation of the hydraulic breaker. A operating valve is used in hydraulic systems to limit the safe working pressure to a certain set level. Its role is to prevent high pressure in the hydraulic circuit from damaging hydraulic system components.
4. Productivity.
Hydraulic breakers that achieve much more power and work per hour are considered more productive.
Productivity is determined by impact energy multiplied by impact frequency. These indicators are difficult to identify in real work, so many manufacturers and sellers exaggerate the data to attract customers. Therefore, when choosing a hydraulic breaker, choose models that include a switch to select the operating mode. In this way, by changing the power and speed of the hydraulic breaker, you can increase productivity in accordance with the requirements in the field.
5. Construction
The smaller the number of parts, seals, connecting threads, the more reliable the hydraulic breaker is.
Hydraulic breakers which have a simpler design with fewer components, require less maintenance and are easier to service, meaning they will serve you better.
6. Simplicity of operation and servicing.
The easier access to lubrication points, hose couplings and tool changes, the more convenient a hydraulic breaker is to use.
For the simplest possible operation, it is always better to choose a model with automatic tool lubrication. The usability of the hydraulic hammer largely depends on the ability to replace the bushing, accumulator membrane and hydraulic valve without completely dismantling the breaker.
7. External noise and vibration.
The volume of work sound and vibration of the hydraulic breaker is important if you are doing work in more urban areas that require a minimum level of noise.
The sound of the breaker operation is reduced if its impact mechanism is located in a closed case and if there are polyurethane buffers between the impact mechanism and the body frame, which do not send vibrations to the hammer body. The silencer protects the connection of the arm and the working machine's arm from vibrations, reducing the wear of the bushing and pins.
